Addicted to Noise

When is the last time you sat in silence? When is the last time you shut off your phone and computer? When is the last time you took a deep breath and felt peace?

No music. No phone calls. No email, Twitter or Facebook notifications.

Our generation is the most technologically advanced generation since God said “let there be light.” Regrettably, we’re also the busiest and most distracted.

We’re addicted to noise.

In Psalm 46:10, we’re told to “Be still, and know that I am God.”

We can quote our favorite Bible verse. We can rock out to our favorite worship chorus. We can know all about God.

Yet there is the possibility that we are missing out on something so important – hearing His voice. Knowing God begins with setting aside our distractions and giving Him the attention He deserves.

Don’t appear still. Be still.

Don’t act calm. Be calm.

Don’t display silence. Be silent.

Hear His voice. Feel His embrace. And know that He is God.

Question: What do you do to disconnect from technology so you can better connect with God?

hi ryan, I like to go up to the lake, but I’m bringing alot of noise with me! I will take time to listen to the world around me and watch the moon on the lake late at night too! sadly I pray more at the cabin than at home…

  3. Hey Mike! I think it’s a struggle for most of us these days. It’s easier to connect with God when we force ourselves to disconnect from everything else. It’s connecting with God in the middle of our crazy technologically-driven lives that is so difficult to figure out.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Hey, Great Thoughts Ryan.

I just wrote about this a couple of weeks a go called “Holy Text Message Batman!”…

It takes into account how people feel when the “lose” or “misplace” their cell phone and how they act like it’s the end of the world!

And God makes the question…”When was the last time you felt like that about me?” ….Like, you couldn’t live without me?

    • Great thoughts, Arny. I especially liked the text message from God picture :)

But I agree with you. We need to depend on God more than we do our “stuff” – a constant battle that I think a lot of people struggle with.
